From Makeup Bag to Clutch Bag

I have a lot of makeup bags from samples which I transformed into a clutch bag.

Materials I used:

  • Makeup bag from Sephora
  • 1 Chain
  • 3 Jump rings
  • 1 Spring clasp
  • 1 Black ribbon
  • Needle and thread

I started off with a makeup bag that I received from a previous Sephora purchase. Then, on the inside of the bag towards the end of the zippers, I hand sewed a jump ring on each end.

Then with a chain long enough to be placed across the body, I attached one end onto the jump ring I sewed on earlier. (I didn’t have gold chains so this will have to work for now until I could get gold chains to match). On the other end of the chain, I attached a spring clasp so I could use this bag as a cross body type clutch or put away the chain to use as a hand held clutch.

The makeup bag has a little tab with the Sephora brand on it. Removing it from the stitching on the inside seems a bit more difficult so I decided to just cover it with ribbon. I used a long piece of ribbon and had burnt the ends so it doesn’t fray.

On the other end where I didn’t attach the chain yet, I attached another jump ring so I could pull the ribbon through and tie it into a bow. That new jump ring is where I will clasp the chain. I then sewed the ends of the bow onto the Sephora tab so it will stay in place. Now the clutch bag is completed.

This came out a lot better than I had thought and it would come in handy for those events where I don’t want to bring a lot of stuff. I just need to swap out the chain for a gold one and I’m good to go.

How would you repurpose your makeup bag?

  1. I love that you did this! The idea first came to me when my son and I were shopping and I was looking at a “pencil” case and I said to him how it would be a cute clutch and my son said, “then use it as a clutch!” Hahaha. The difference between a make-up bag, pouch, pencil case is what you say it is! I like that you put a chain on it. So cute. Well done Vicky! 🙂
