Makeup Brush Cleaning

Ever since I started using makeup brushes to do my makeup, I always try to make it a priority to keep them clean. I’m a clean freak when it comes to brushes and makeups that have to go on my face; I used to have a lot of acne and I believe clean makeup tools plays a vital role to keeping clear skin. So, I would try to clean them every 1-2 weeks. I had initially tried to clean them with water and soap but it wasn’t very effective.

I found the Sonia Kashuk Brush and Sponge Cleanser at Target once and gave it a try. The cleanser comes in a clear container with a spray nozzle.

Directions on the bottle:

  1. Wet brush hairs or sponge, then liberally spray Brush & Sponge Cleanser all over.
  2. Work Cleanser in by massaging with fingers to get a good lather going
  3. Fully rinse until water runs clear. You may need to repeat step 2 again for sponges.
  4. For brushes, using your thumb and index finger, squeeze all water out of the hairs, starting at the ferrule and pull through until you pass the tip of the hairs. For sponges, squeeze until all excess water is out.
  5. Lay flat to dry.

I follow these steps exactly. I spray it on one brush and lather. As I lather on my hand, it bubbles and the makeup residue starts to come off. I like to brush them onto my hand as if I’m painting and I will slowly see the makeup come off (the eyeliner brush is usually the most visible but I wasn’t able to get a picture). After I rinse, I just leave it to air dry or if I need to use it later that day, I would dry it with a fan.

I really like this brush cleanser but I haven’t tried other brush cleansers before so I can’t compare. For $6.99 though, I think it does a pretty good job with cleaning the brushes. I’ve used this product for a few years now but I will most likely restock on this again.

How do you clean your makeup brushes?
